Question

WARNING: YOU ARE RUNNING AN END OF LIFE VERSION OF AMAZON LINUX

Name: Lou Wallington

Location: HOLDER

I've just logged into the AWS EC2 console via Putty. Ive received a message saying: WARNING: YOU ARE RUNNING AN END OF LIFE VERSION OF AMAZON LINUX

Newer Amazon Linux versions are:
Amazon Linux 2023, supported until 2028-03-15
https://aws.amazon.com/linux/amazon-linux-2023/
Amazon Linux 2, supported until 2025-06-30
https://aws.amazon.com/amazon-linux-2/
Thanks for using https://aws.amazon.com/amazon-linux-ami/

My questions are what are the steps to fix this and potentially install a newer version, I see there is an AWS Linux 2.

Answer

First update security using the YUM command, followed by updating your Linux Version

Yes, if you haven't logged into AWS in a long time. You are shown a header message prior to the Console Log in Prompt. This message may include the following:

1 package(s) needed for security, out of 1 available

Follow the instructions for updating the security via a YUM update using command yum update, or if you are not in SUDO mode, you can type sudo yum update. This will download and install an update onto the Server.

Post the Linux Security Update, and before updating the AWS EC2 Linux, firstly its best proceedure  to do this during a maintenance window also advising users and staff. update. Secondly, you need to perform an EC2 image and backup before proceeding.

You could also write a script to backup, then update, then revert to the old system should your software, server or website/s incur problems.

Should the above work, good one! Remember your timeframe is until 2028 so you might as well update AWS EC2 operating system for best practice, extended features and security purpose sooner than later.

This message is displayed with Centos, Redhat, Ubuntu and alternate OS.
