Can a builder install a driveway over an existing NBN pit? Do they need to get approval from NBNCO to do this?
Name: Mr Telco
Location: Australia Wide
NBN-owned assets, including the underground pits with concrete lids, must remain fully accessible to the NBN, its network operators, and contractors.
Directly concreting over these pits is inadvisable, as they serve as access points to the network and the cables running throughout the street.
It appears that you intend to concrete around the pit, possibly due to its location in the crossover section or because you are extending or adding a driveway.
NBN pits are subject to Australian Standard AS3996. The classification, such as "CLASS B," will be stamped on the pit lid and determines the load it can bear and whether it is trafficable by vehicles. To get an idea, click this link for a brief idea on the load capabilities of the Telsta/NBN pits.
The NBN provides documentation for builders and property developers regarding these standards.
NBN pits must be flush with driveways to prevent hazards and liabilities.
It is advisable to have a registered technician or NBN representative attend the premises where the driveway is to be installed. They will assess the suitability and integrity of the infrastructure to ensure compliance.
